Airlie Monument and Dykehead walk 29/04/17

Another walking weekend, this time we headed up Tulloch Hill by Kirriemuir to the Airlie Monument, a memorial of North Central Angus, the Airlie Monument lies high on Tulloch Hill(387m / 1269 feet) between the ends of Glen Prosen and Glen Clova, 5 miles (8 km) north of Kirriemuir.
The monument was built in 1901 in honour of David Ogilvy, the 9th Earl of Airlie (1856 - 1900) who was killed in South Africa at the Battle of Diamond Hill during the Boer War.

The Scott Wilson sculpture was commissioned to replace an existing monument to Captain Robert Scott and Doctor Edward Wilson of the Antarctic in the Centennial year of 2012. After serving with Captain Scott as a scientist on the Discovery Antarctic Expedition, Dr Edward Wilson was employed by the government to undertake the Grouse Disease Survey. During this time, he lived and worked from nearby Burnside Lodge. Captain Scott visited him frequently and asked him to accept the post of Chief Scientist and Surgeon on the fateful Terra Nova Expedition. Much of the planning was done from here. http://www.brucewalkersculptor.co.uk/projects-in-depth/scott-wilson-sculpture/
